Per Walter Preston, researching Silas' family and in conversation with Mary Louise Oppenheimer McDaniel, daughter of Ralph, Sr., granddaughter of Silas & Mary Jane: Silas immigrated to America (by local reports) in 1876. Levi came with Silas that year, Charlie (Karl) came abt 1882. One of the sisters stayed in Germany, and Silas & later Ralph, Sr., tried to get her out of the country. The last report was that she had lost their (hers & her husband's) linen factory and was a victim of the Holocaust (unconfirmed). Walter has reason to believe she married a Hany. (6/2 001) 7-9-2001 per Ellis Island Records Search: Found 2 ship manifests, one on 8-5-1913 (arrived at Ellis Island) for SILAS OPPENHEIMER, age 54 yrs, gender Male, Marital Status: Married, Ship: S.S. Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, Departure from Bremen, Germany (*U.S. Citizen). Second on: 8/24/1924 (arrived at Ellis) for SILAS OPPENHEIMER, age 65 yrs, Gender Male, Marital Status: Married, Ship: Columbus, Departure from Bremen, Germany. (*U.S. Citizen). NOTE: This puts Silas' birthdate in 1859, both ships records agree. And both records list RESIDENCE: PAINTSVILLE, KY Silas died in 1929. He was making these trips to find his sister (?) who was thought to have been taken to a concentration camp. Silas was alone on both these voyages as far as I can determine. No other Oppenheimers were listed on either record. Mary (Louise Oppenheimer McDaniel) mentioned something about Silas being a business partner with John Buckingham way back when. It had something to do with oil leases. The J ohn Buckingham fellow was John C. C. Mayo’s right hand man. So close was Buckingham to JCCM that he was executor of the estate in which JCCM’s wife was to defer to Buckingham's business decisions in executing the will. Mayo was the fellow who started the coal business in the Big Sandy Valley. He also built a house on 3rd Street, a small 22 room mansion. Buckingham was a founder of 1st National Bank in Paintsville KY and eventually was on the board or owned interests in at least 4 other banks from Jenkins to Ashland KY. He also wrote a recollection of Paintsville as it was in the late 19th century and made a map of the town circa 1890’s. The Paintsville library has the original manuscript for that article. It appears that Silas kept very interesting business company. Silas is buried in Mayo Cemetery, Paintsville, Johnson Co., KY. Silas was a noted businessman in the dry goods business with a Russian emigrant, Nathan Flax, until 1928 or '29 (just shortly before his death), per obit in Walter Prestons's research through microfilm of the local newspaper (Paintsville, KY). He was married to Mary Jane EVANS (daughter of Drew EVANS and Mary "Polly" Ann PENNINGTON) about 1880 in Sandy Hook, Elliott Co., KY. Mary Jane EVANS was born on Feb 12 1863 in Sandy Hook, Elliott Co., KY. She resided before 1905 in Sandy Hook, Elliott Co., KY. She resided in 1905 in Paintsville, Johnson Co., KY. MARY JANE OPPENHEIMER Although she had been in declining health for some time her sudden death was a great shock to her family and friends. She was born in Sandy Hook, Ky., on February 12, 1863, the daughter of Drew and Polly Ann Pennington Evans. The widow of Silas Oppenheimer, who preceded her in death in 1929, she was loved and admired by a host of friends in this community where she had made her home for the past fourty-four years. She was a devout member of the Methodist Church, she lived a faithful Christian life. Always interested in the welfare of others and possessed of tolerance and understanding, her life was an inspiration to her children, and left a lasting impression upon her countless friends. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are six children: three daughters; Mrs. Verna Thomas, Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Susan DeHart, Sandy Hook, Ky.; Mrs. Mabel Barney, Columbus, Ohio; three sons; George, Cincinnati, Ohio; Otto, Knoxville, Iowa; and Rudolph of this city. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. T. Harmon in the Mayo Memorial Church Thursday at 2:00 p. m. Burial was in the Mayo Cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home. The gun, a snub-nosed .38 colt is said to have belonged to John Dillinger. The gun is host to four notches on the handle. The significance of the notches were unknown but widely speculated.
